A NOTE FROM THE WRITER:
One time, I was handcuffed to a wheelchair at a psych ward in Hollis, Queens, and the orderlies left me parked next to a young woman who was also handcuffed to a wheelchair. We just sat there. It was awkward. Not much to say.
Then the girl turned to me: "I like your sneakers."
"Thanks, " I said. "They're new."
That moment was the starting point of The Imperfection: the world, as confusing as it is, offers us these little moments of revelation: that friendship is more important than reality, and trust is the greatest truth of all.
